Sylvia: trained overseas

Sylvia Ibie qualified at the University of Lagos, Nigeria in 1997 and has been working as a radiographer in the UK for 15 years.

Sylvia's career to-date has been diverse and exciting. She worked in a number of hospitals in London and the south east of England, before joining the Royal Auxillary Air Force (RAF) in 2003.

As a radiography reservist, she was one of thousands of part-time civilian volunteers providing additional support to the regular forces.

“It was such a fantastic experience and the high point of my career was being posted to Iraq for a six month tour of duty.”

“I worked in a field hospital and gained a valuable insight into medical emergencies and trauma. I felt enormously privileged to be working as a member of the UK troops and helping to make a true difference.”

Sylvia left the RAF in 2009, and moved on to her next challenge – a six month stint deputising for the general radiology manager at University College Hospital in London.

She has now returned to the clinical practice she loves and specialises in all the major modalities covering general and A&E services, as well as theatre and paediatric work.

“Radiography is such a broad profession and there are so many different areas in which to specialise,” she says. “I have an enormously fulfilling career and I'm very grateful for the opportunities I've been given.

“I've seen a lot of changes in the years that I've been a radiographer, particularly in terms of the technology and the way it is advancing. This is only a small part of being a radiographer, though, and I feel proud to be part of such a caring profession that puts the patient experience at the heart of everything it does.”
