Background

The College of Radiographers (CoR), in partnership with the College of Radiographers Industry Partnership Scheme (CoRIPS) provides funding for a doctoral fellowship grant.

Open to members of the Society of Radiographers, the grant provides funding for members wishing to undertake doctoral level research.

The annual funding opportunity focuses on core areas where those working across radiography disciplains can make a positive impact to the lives of patients and their families or carers. Research topics can cover any of the following thematic areas:

  • Public and patient experience
  • Accuracy and safety
  • Technological innovations
  • Service and workforce transformation
  • Education and training

Improving patient care

Dr Gareth Hill, Deputy Director of Evidence at Healthcare Improvement Scotland (HIS) was awarded a CoR doctoral fellowship of £25,000 to fulfil his research on "The impact of cancer treatment on LGB people’s identity".

A therapeutic radiographer and academic, Dr Hill undertook his research while working as the Head of Therapeutic Radiography at Ninewells Hospital in NHS Tayside, between 2018 - 2022.

In a podcast recorded with Ross McGhee, SoR | CoR President for 2022/23, Dr Hill explains why a person-centred approach to healthcare is so important to patients:

"As LGBT people accessing healthcare, we sometimes don't fit with what people's assumptions are. The danger is that if we as practitioners treat everybody the same, then it gives rise to problems, because we're not the same. We're all different.

"When you treat everyone the same, what you do is risk excluding certain people that don't quite meet the script that you're following. And you think you're being fair but you need to recognise that people come from all sorts of different backgrounds and communities."
